The new HVR-Z7U HDV Camcorder uses Sony’s 1/3-inch
3 ClearVid
CMOS Sensor system enhanced by Exmor technology.
With a 45-degree rotated pixel layout, the 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor
system offers sufficient pixel surface area while maintaining high resolution.
Images will appear crisper, without the apparent "jaggies" that often plague
video signals. The Exmor technology features a unique column-parallel
analog-to-digital conversion technique and dual noise canceling, resulting
in high-quality digital signals with extremely low noise, similar to the
imaging technology used in the PMW-EX1 camera. The two new
technologies combine to allow the new camcorders to perform
significantly better in low-light environments with sensitivity of 1.5 lux.
Sony HVR-Z7U is an HDV handheld camcorder featuring a lens mount
for interchangeable lenses.
Users get the best of both worlds with this innovative camcorder. The
HVR-Z7U's unique design is the first of its kind; a handheld camera
with the interchangeable lens capability.
This imaging technology is complemented by Sony’s Enhanced Imaging
Processor (EIP) system to achieve high resolution, high sensitivity, wide
dynamic range, and excellent color reproduction.
Users can attach different lenses for extra flexibility, and both models have
a universal standard 1/3-inch bayonet mount mechanism for easier
lens
changes.
The HVR-Z7U comes standard with a 12x high-quality, multi-purpose
Carl Zeiss lens for HD video, with a Vario-Sonnar T coating
to reduce
reflections. A specially designed 8x wide-angle lens is also available as an
option.
These new lenses give the HVR-Z7U the same functionality as Sony’s
popular fixed-lens camcorders like the HVR-Z1U and HVR-V1U,
thanks to built-in features such as auto-focus, optical stabilizer, and
automatic back-focus adjustment.
Using a special adaptor, users can also attach the lens
series
designed for Sony’s consumer digital SLR still cameras.
The HVR-Z7U offers 108024p and 30p native progressive recording.
The 3 ClearVid CMOS Sensor system and EIP technology create true
1080p images, which can then be recorded as progressive signals by the
HVR-Z7U camcorder in the HDV format. In 24p mode, images from the
CMOS can be 2:3 pulldown-converted and recorded onto tape in the
standard 60i HDV format. The progressive HDV streams can be output
from an i.LINK interface by uploading 2:3 pulldown-converted images
and used for True 24p progressive editing with compatible NLE software.
The tape can then be played back or edited using an ordinary HDV system.
The resultant images resemble the visual motion of film!
The HVR-Z7U can switch between 1080p, 1080i in the HDV format,
DVCAM, and DV recording, and can down-convert material from HD
to SD, and output the video signals through its i.LINK interface and
other
SD output connectors.
The HVR-Z7U has an HDMI output allowing users to connect the
camera
to any HDTV and view footage purely digital!
The HVR-Z7U uses Sony’s XtraFine LCD and XtraFine electronic
viewfinder for high-resolution and high-contrast images with remarkable
color reproduction. In the field, now you can rest assured that what
you see is what you get with this HD LCD screen.
The new camcorder offer the option of hybrid recording when
using a
supplied memory-recording unit, which attaches directly to
the back
of the HVR-Z7U and eliminates the need for cables. The unit
automatically synchronizes with the recording action of the camcorder
and a special shoe connector inputs and outputs an HDV/DV stream and
supplies power to the unit.
This unit captures the HDV1080i, DVCAM, or DV stream output from
the camcorder and can record HDV/DVCAM/DV files to a standard
CompactFlash solid-state memory card, while users are simultaneously
recording to tape.
It will be compatible with Sony’s Professional 306x CompactFlash
card as well as standard CompactFlash cards (2GB minimum capacity
to 16GB maximum capacity are what Sony supports, and at a 133x minimum
speed which means at least 25Mbps.Please check with Sony at their Product
Operation Support Group at (800) 883-6817). The recording times on an 8
and 16 GB CompactFlash card regardless of format (HDV, DVCAM and DV)
are approximately 36 and 72 minutes, respectively.
The HVR-Z7U can deliver more than 60 minutes of recording
time on
miniDV videotapes, and approximate recording times of 63 minutes
with Sony’s DigitalMaster cassettes (PHDVM-63DM).

With a special adaptor from Sony, it is also possible to use the lens series designed for Sony Digital SLR still
cameras.By using lenses in various configurations, creative
effects can be achieved. This approach is ideal for filmmakers on a budget or those who already own lenses.
Note: The focal length is doubled with a 2/3-inch lens adaptor. The focal length is increased 1.3 times with a 1/2-inch lens adaptor. The focal length is increased 7 times with an lens adaptor. Some lenses may not be compatible and not all lens functions may be available.
Limitations when using Sony Alpha lenses with HVR-Z7U and HVR-S270U:
• Alpha Zoom Lens
o Focus may not track properly when zooming. When changing zoom
position, readjust focus.
• Alpha Fixed Focus Lens
o The desired resolution may not be attained at the open edge
depending on lens. If this occurs, adjust lens aperture using lens aperture ring.
• Alpha Telephoto lens
o Lenses such as those listed below are heavy and will place
a load on the camera lens mounting. When using heavy lenses, always use a tripod
+ support for the camera and the lens individually.
o Some examples of heavy lenses are –
•SAL70200G 70-200mm f2.8 Sony Alpha G lens
•SAL300F28G 300MM f2.8 G Sony Alpha G lens
Notes when using Alpha lenses with HDV video camcorders:
• When recording, use REC START/STOP button of handle instead of that on the grip.
• Adjust focus and the zoom by manual operation only.
• SteadyShot function is not available.
• Depending on the kind of lens, the focal distance display and the focal distance may not match.
• The iris value appears as “_ _” on the LCD screen.
• When an Alpha lens is attached to a 1/3”-type camera mount, the focal distance may shift approx. 7.3
times with a 35mm-format.
• Using a tripod or gripping a handle is recommended when shooting, because there is no grip on the lens.
• When attaching an Alpha lens to the HDV video camcorder using the LA100W adapter, the following functions cannot be used:
o TW SENS
o AE SHIFT
o AE WINDOW
o AE RESPONSE
o AT IRIS LMT
o BACK LIGHT
o SPOTLIGHT
o STEADYSHOT
o AF ASSIST
o FOCUS MACRO
o HANDLE ZOOM (When recording, this can be used as PB ZOOM.)
o SHOT TRANS
o FOCUS MARKING
o FLANGE BACK
o FOCUS
o ONE PUSH AF
o FOCUS INFINITY
o Assign buttons on the Lens
o ZOOM DISPLAY
o Display of the focal distance
o Display of the iris value
o ZOOM and FOCUS by the Remote Commander
